newsletter #10 – français en bleu
A lot has happened since
August, when I was travelling from north to south (of France).
Many things, too many to be able (and willing) to report in
detail. Some of you are up to date, those of you who are curious
might want to give me a call! In a nutshell: I parked my car in
Marseille, then travelled by train to Rotterdam, Eindhoven,
Vienna and Boisbuchet, worked there, met friends and was part of
an international artists' residency (that sounds great).
Il s'est passé beaucoup de choses
depuis le mois d'août, lorsque j'étais en route du nord au sud
(de la France). Beaucoup de choses, trop pour que je puisse
(et veuille) les raconter en détail. Certains d'entre vous
sont au courant, pour les curieux, il vaut mieux téléphoner !
En bref : j'ai garé ma voiture à Marseille, puis j'ai pris le
train pour Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Vienne et Boisbuchet, où j'ai
travaillé, rencontré des amis et fait partie d'une résidence
d'artistes internationale (ça a l'air sympa).
Since mid-September I am (finally) in Marseille, at home. Those
who have been following the newsletter for a while also know
where: At La Déviation, a collective in l'Estaque, on the
outskirts of Marseille. Before I tell you about it, I have to
finish my travel report for the sake of completeness and out of an
obsession with documentation. So the journey continued,
mid-October, across France: setting up a yurt in the Jura, a
residency in Normandy, and a visit to Paris (more on this too,
later).
Depuis mi-septembre, je suis (enfin) à
Marseille, chez moi. Ceux qui suivent la newsletter depuis
longtemps savent aussi où : A La Déviation, un collectif situé à
l'Estaque, un quartier excentré de Marseille. Avant d'en parler,
je dois, par souci d'exhaustivité et par obsession de
documentation, terminer mon récit de voyage. La suite, c'est
donc mi-octobre à travers la France : monter une yourte dans le
Jura, une résidence en Normandie, et une visite à Paris (à ce
sujet aussi, plus tard).
I am quite happy with how things are developing for me here in
France. My return to the Déviation is a step towards the “base" I
have longed for. There I have some basic comfort, space for my
stuff, a workshop and soon a stable place to stay (without
wheels). "Dani, don't you live in your van?" - True, but soon I'll
be moving, into an old shipping container! Immediately after my
arrival in mid-September, La Déviation obtained 8 containers, and
we spent a month receiving and setting them up. (I made a

Je suis assez heureux de la façon dont les
choses évoluent pour moi ici en France. Mon retour à la
Déviation est un pas vers ma "base" tant attendue. J'y ai un
certain confort de base, de la place pour mes affaires, un
atelier et bientôt un logement stable (sans roues). "Dani,
est-ce que tu ne vis pas dans ton van ?" - Si, c'est vrai, mais
je vais bientôt déménager, dans un ancien conteneur de fret !
Immédiatement après mon arrivée mi-septembre, La Déviation a
acquis 8 conteneurs, et nous avons passé un mois à les recevoir
et à les installer. (j'ai fait une vidéo en accéléré de la

A container, then! But I can't move in yet, for the time being
I'll stay in the car and park in front of it. A big project will
be the insulation and the conversion of the container - preferably
with straw insulation and clay finish. If you want to learn how to
insulate with straw, build a terrace or install windows, please
wait for my call for help, probably in spring next year.
Un conteneur, alors ! Mais je ne peux pas
encore y emménager, jusqu'à nouvel ordre je reste dans la
voiture et je me gare devant. Un grand projet sera l'isolation
et l'aménagement du container - de préférence avec une isolation
en paille et un enduit en argile. Si quelqu'un a envie
d'apprendre à isoler en paille, à construire une terrasse ou à
poser des fenêtres, qu'iel attende mon appel à l'aide prévue au
printemps 2023.
Besides my container, there are 7 others, and with their
arrival, the work was (and is) not over yet.
One of them was chosen as a material storage, we doubled its floor
space and covered it with 50m2 of corrugated sheet metal. Not bad,
and I was quite proud of my technical drawing, also the welding
points are showing. Now we still have to build 2 staircases and 1
terrace, then nothing stands in the way (at least architecturally)
of the first residents moving in.
En plus de mon conteneur, il y en a sept
autres, et le travail n'a pas été (et n'est toujours pas)
terminé avec leur arrivée. L'un d'entre eux a été choisi comme
stockage de matériel, nous avons doublé sa surface au sol et
l'avons recouvert de 50m2 de tôle ondulée. Pas mal, et j'étais
assez fier de mon dessin technique, ainsi que mes points de
soudure. Il ne reste plus qu'à construire deux escaliers et une
terrasse, et rien ne s'opposera plus à l'emménagement des
premiers habitants (du moins sur le plan architectural).
At the moment I'm trying not to neglect my own work. There are
two new projects I'm looking forward to:
Firstly, Création en Cours. In October I was in Paris for the
kick-off of the artist residency Création-en-Cours, organised by
the Ateliers Medicis. CEC is a support programme for young artists
that includes a residency in primary schools. The whole thing
takes place in schools that are, according to the official
description, "remote from the cultural offer". In my case, it's
the commune of Chamblet in the Allier! Check out travel

The preparations are in full swing, I
will probably be on site between March and July. More details will

And secondly: back to Brussels! I already have worked there
once with CityMine(d) in August 2021 (https://citymined.variable.pm/en/sunsud).
At the beginning of 2022, we responded together to a call for
projects from the City of Brussels, and because we were
successful, we have been working for a few weeks now on a project
that will extend over the whole of the year 2023! To put it
roughly, it's about "energy", a topic that preoccupies and
fascinates me. The aim is to discuss concrete ways of producing
energy, reducing energy consumption and energy efficiency with
people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Brussels. For this
purpose, I design and produce objects, installations and
interventions that can stimulate these discussions - the first one
: a bicycle trailer, that' s all I'll tell you just yet.
En ce moment, j'essaie de ne pas
négliger mon propre travail. Car il y a deux nouveaux projets
que j'attends avec impatience :
Le premier est Création en Cours. En
octobre, j'étais à Paris pour la rentrée de la résidence
d'artistes Création-en-Cours, organisée par les Ateliers
Medicis. CEC est un programme de soutien pour les jeunes
artistes, qui comprend une période de résidence dans des écoles
primaires, avec des élèves de CM2. Le tout se déroule dans des
écoles qui, selon la description officielle, sont "éloignées de
l'offre culturelle". Dans mon cas, il s'agit de la commune de
Chamblet dans l'Allier ! Cherchez déjà des itinéraires pour

Et le deuxième : retour à Bruxelles ! J'y
ai déjà travaillé une fois avec CityMine(d) en août 2021 (https://citymined.variable.pm/en/sunsud).
Début 2022, nous avons répondu ensemble à un appel à projets de
la ville de Bruxelles, et comme nous avons été retenus, nous
travaillons depuis quelques semaines sur un projet qui s'étendra
sur toute l'année 2023 à venir ! Grosso modo, le sujet est
"l'énergie", un thème qui me préoccupe et me fascine. L'objectif
est de discuter avec des personnes issues de quartiers
défavorisés de Bruxelles des possibilités concrètes de
production d'énergie, de réduction de la consommation d'énergie
et d'efficacité énergétique. Pour cela, je conçois et réalise
des objets, des installations et des interventions qui peuvent
stimuler ces discussions - dans un premier temps : une remorque
de vélo, je n'en dis pas plus pour l'instant.
